김선영의 작업 중 대표적인 작업은 일상적으로 우리가 스치고 지나가는 장면들, 다시 말해 우리가 평소에 관심을 가지고 본 풍경이 아니라, 눈으로 보긴 하지만 기억 속에 각인되지 않고 소멸되어 버리는 어떻게 보면 버려진 풍경들을 대상으로 삼는다. 다시 말하면 기억과 기억 사이 속에 빈 공간의 풍경이라 할 수 있다. 김선영은 이러한 너무나도 평범하고 일상적인 장면들을 사진으로 찍고 이를 인화하여 다시 스크래치를 내서 또 다른 풍경을 만들어낸다. 이러한 과정을 통해 나타나는 풍경들은 더 이상 평범한 풍경이 아니라 작가에 의해서 독특한 풍경으로 재탄생된다. 김선영은 이러한 방식으로 일상적인 것들을 변형시킴으로써 진실된 풍경을 찾기 위한 작업을 한다. 이는 단순한 사진 작업이 아니라 반복적이며 다분히 노동 집약적인 행위를 통해 자신만의 고행과도 같은 작업 방식을 취한다. 이러한 과정들을 통해 그녀는 자신이 주관적이던 객관적이던 자신이 바라보는 세상의 본질을 찾으려는 시도를 하고 있다. 하지만 이러한 작업들이 횟수를 더 해가면서 반복되는 작업의 과정과 내용을 통한 이미지 또한 형식적으로 고착화 되면서 시각적인 독특함만이 부각 될 수 있는 약점을 들어낸다.
하지만 김선영은 최근에는 설치작업을 통해서 블럭을 만들어내고 그것에 물을 뿌리면 그 형태가 사라지고 글자가 나타나는 작업을 시도 하고 있다. 이러한 작업 역시 자신이 의문을 품고 있는 이 세상의 본질을 찾는 작업이다. 이는 자칫 고착화 될 수 있고 정형화 될 수 있는 자신의 작업에서 탈피하여 자신이 이야기하고자 하는 하나의 사물이나 세상이 가지고 있는 고정된 틀과 논리에서 벗어나려는 다양한 작업을 통해서 자신이 이야기하고자 하는 세상의 본질 혹은 세상의 실체에 다가가려는 노력을 계속하고 있다. 이러한 다양한 시도와 노력은 그녀의 작업의 근본적인 힘이며 장점이라 할 수 있으며, 다양한 재료와 표현 방법을 사용하더라도 자신이 추구하는 예술관과 목표를 잃지 않는 태도는 앞으로의 작업을 기대하게 한다.︎

Most prolific piece among Kim’s works focuses on ordinary sceneries that we often pass by, in other words, such sceneries which we see with our eyes, but often forgotten with our being carved into our memories. We could perhaps state them as scenery of empty places in between memories. Kim has created very different sceneries from these common scenes by taking pictures of them and scratching them. Through this process, what once was a common scene has been re-created into something unique. By transforming ordinary things, Kim works to capture the true identity of such scenes. This isn’t just the processing of photography. Through repetitive and labor like process, she puts herself into asceticism. She is looking for the very nature of the world she is living in, whether it is objective or subjective. However, as this process is repeated, the work shows weakness as the resulting image tends to be fixed in certain way and only visual particularity has been highlighted.

Recently, Kim, Sun Young has been trying a different method for her work. After creating a block by installation work, she’s been trying to make the letters appear from those blocks when they are sprayed with water. Such process is also to discover the true nature of this world. She is trying to avoid being fixed in doing her work by trying various methods to locate the true identity of the world. Such tendency for trying different methods has to be her works’ core strength. Despite using various techniques, she stays true to her view on arts, and such attitude allows us to have high expectation for her future.︎
